The folks at Fog Creek have been kind enough to give us a default site configuration that will help us publish articles without doing much of anything. We are now going to remove all of this and start to create a simple hierarchical site. We will progressively add to this configuration as we go along.

A template describes how each page should look and where the various information pieces of our articles will appear.

In its simplest form, a template is a simple HTML file that includes placeholders for article content. CityDesk contents and variables and CityScripts are always enclosed in {$ $}. For example, the following template creates pages that have the headline of each article as the <h1> element, and then the body of each article placed after.

The Framework of our site consists of all, or most, of the pages organized and linked together. We prepare a framework to help determine if the organization makes sense to our visitors before we invest a lot of time in the text.

Add new articles into each of the folders. You can choose whatever name you like for each article. However, never use spaces in file and directory names! See Spaces in Names for more information.

A key aspect of our navigation system is that it must show us where we are, but at the moment it does not. So here are the final changes we will make to our template to make this happen.

We have two navigation devices to change, the cardinal navigation bar and the local navigation bar. We will discuss each separately.
